
Pavia, 4 April 2025 – Analyzing, with the help of authoritative scholars from Europe, the USA and Australia, the Battle of Pavia in its various historical aspects and in its multiple artistic and literary implications, without of course forgetting the military, strategic and geopolitical context, to have a valuable key to understanding the society of the time in all its complexity.
This is the objective of the international conference “Pavia 1525. An epochal battle in a changing world” which will be held from 7 to 9 April, promoted by the University of Pavia and organized as part of the initiatives for the Five Hundredth Anniversary of the Battle of Pavia. The conference will take place both at the university and at some university colleges of merit, in order to involve the main cultural institutions of the city as much as possible.
Through the interventions of international experts, the Conference intends to propose an updated and interdisciplinary reflection on a fundamental chapter of Italian and European military and political history, divided into six sessions dedicated respectively to: “The military and geopolitical context”, “The battle and its narration in a comparative historical framework”, “The strategic-diplomatic implications of the battle”, “The conflict on the territory and its literary reflections”, “The battle in literature”, “The battle in art”.
The conference will be inspired by the most recent historiography, according to which the study of specific important events allows us to understand phenomena of greater scope.
The conference is part of the events promoted by the Promoting and High Coordination Committee of the Five Centenary of the Battle of Pavia composed of the Municipality of Pavia, the University of Pavia, the Chamber of Commerce of Cremona-Mantua-Pavia, the Monte di Lombardia Foundation.
The event is also combined with an important musical event. In fact, in honor of international guests but open to all, the concert of the quartet of the Soloists of Pavia will be held on April 7 at 7.15 pm in the Basilica of San Teodoro, which, born in 2001 in the city theater under the aegis of the legendary cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, represents a cultural excellence of international prestige.
The Quartet will perform “The Last Seven Words of Christ on the Cross” (Hob. XX:2) by Franz Joseph Haydn in the version for string quartet.
